Belle Plaine was founded by Andrew Chatfield, a Minnesota judge, in the 1850s. He chose the site for the town while riding through the region on horseback on his way to court. While the Twin Cities area has grown into a true urban metro since, Belle Plaine has quietly developed a small downtown while retaining its scenic beauty. Surrounded by farmland, Belle Plaine is secluded without being isolated. Cultural, dining, shopping and employment opportunities are plentiful in Minneapolis, which is located about 40 miles away.

In town, several community parks provide quiet retreats for Belle Plaine residents. Park facilities include playgrounds, open fields, picnic facilities, basketball courts, lighted softball fields and more. The city also maintains a network of trails for walking, bicycling jogging and horseback riding.

The historic town of Murphy’s Landing is a popular attraction located about 20 minutes north of Belle Plaine. Visitors will enjoy the historic buildings and costumed actors portraying life in the Minnesota River Valley in the second half of the 19th century. Political events occurring during that time period include Minnesota’s statehood, the Civil War, conflict with Native Americans and the influx of European settlers. You are also within: One hour of The Mall Of America, Hubert H. Humphrey International Airport, Metrodome Sports Stadium; 20 minutes from Valleyfair Amusement Park, Mystic Lake Casino and Resort and major shopping outlets.
